The lists of military recruitment (Liste di Leva and Ruoli Matricolari)
The Liste di Leva contain the name of all those young residents in an Italian province who were twenty years old and in conditions to go to the military service.
The Ruoli Matricolari contains a list of those young enrolled in the army. The government established a number of youth had to do military service.
The men who did not perform military service were available to be called to arms in times of war, to forty years old.
But the ruoli matricolari contains all enrolled youth: those who performed military service and those who did not. Young people with serious illnesses or disabilities are not enrolled, therefore, will not find them in the ruoli matricolari.

Lists of leva available on line and in LDS microfilm
Not knowing the name of the commune in which our forbear was born, and knowing only the province’s name, these records become a very important source. That’s why some Archives of the State had load up these recruitment records on line.
Between them we can find:
1 – Archives of the State’s project:
Benevento, provincia - Ruoli Matricolari de la provincia di Benevento 1872-1928
Como – Records from 1885 to 1890. In that database we only may find first name, last name and year of birth. It’s required to sign up in the site, only once.
Cosenza - Military recruitment lists are indexed and digitized, displaying images- Consult is for free, but a subscription is required.
Gorizia - Lists of military recruitment and Registri matricolari 1875-1909 - Registri matricolari 1910-1911 - Registro Sottufficiali - Aggiornamenti di ruoli vari.
Mantova- Provincial State Archive’s project. It includes lists of military recruitment from 1847 to 1900 of 70 provincial communes.
Milano - 1870-1890. In that database we only may find first name, last name and year of birth. It’s required to sign up in the site, only once.
Padova, province – Lists of military recruitment of the Distretto Militare di Padova , which includes the provinces of Padova and Rovigo, from 1846 to 1902. Archives of the State of Padova’s project.

Treviso – List of “renitenti” 1855-1873 and Ruoli Matricolari of the District of Treviso 1874-1879. The page has a browser, but not digitized records.
Udine - Friuli in prin - Provincial State Archive’s project - It has records extracted from military recruitment lists of 1846-1890 from the mandamenti de Ampezzo, Cividale, Gemona, Latisana, Moggio, San Daniele, San Pietro, Tolmezzo e Tarcento. Also has records extracted from marriage records (only marriages) included in the period 1871-1900 from all the communes of the province of Udine, except the area under Austrian sovereignty. 3 - Microfilmed records:
Family Search also had microfilmed military records in some Italian provinces. You need to find the province of your research and after that, the item MILITARY RECORDS or DOCUMENTI MILITARI. In some cases we’ll find Lists of Military Recruitment and in others “Ruoli Matricolari”.
In this way, we may check our military records easily sited in a Family History Center. Research in these documents will give us an important genealogical family’s rebuilt, (siblings, uncles, etc.) and our ancestors’ military records.
